Good Morning Newgrounds! There is a lot being done under the hood of Newgrounds with the death of Flash. Many new members who are picking up Daily Feature's in P-Bot's Postings and the return of veterans as well. New users have been joining the site at a rapid pace. If you're one of the new users reading this paper, then Welcome to Newgrounds! Hope you enjoy your stay here, I certainly have for the past 14 years now. Valentine's Day is on the horizon, love is in the air and it's still cold outside (at least where I'm at). With all of that said, here are the hip happenings of Newgrounds last week.
@Sonucais has been collecting workarounds to play older Flash submissions on Newgrounds. If you're having trouble try out one of the solutions that he has outlined. If you're still having an issue with a particular submission then report it to the Ruffle Testing / Flash Preservation Crew.
Two week ago, The Tank Tribune chose @Peaceblossom as Supporter of the Week. One of Newgrounds most helpful members, judging multiple contests, and entering them as one of Newgrounds best writers. @preskoo has let us know that Peaceblossom's account has been deleted. The story as of now is that it was a self deletion. We do not have the reason behind the deletion yet.
If you're entry for the Flash Forward Jam isn't done yet then don't despair, the deadline has been moved to February 28th. That's the end of this month.

The first season has recently wrapped and the second season is one the way. This is your chance to get caught up if you haven't listened to this series.
This week's Featured Artist is one of our newest artists to hit the scene. Her name is @MellonSnow and she has transitioned some of her older pieces to the site. The Tribune welcomed her as a new user to the site. Now her works are here for you to see!

@Bad-CRC brought us this movie way back in 2001. It will be twenty years old this month. Making fun of the badly translated Zero Wing for the Sega Genesis with a parody song. This line and movie became so famous on Newgrounds that it would sit at the bottom of the page for years. On certain pages on the site that do not have this latest redesign you can still see it.
@Kutaykomiks, who you may remember was a featured artist in the Tribune for his entry in the Musk Jam, has announced that Newgrounds is now available to the citizens of Turkey. He was using a VPN to browse Newgrounds, but now it is open there. If you're using a VPN to browse Newgrounds as well, let us know where you're at.
@DaemonPlus made a new Discord server called Newgrounds Atomix. It was made as a faster way for Newgrounds members to chat with one another.

Good Morning Newgrounds! My vacation at my day job is over and now it's back to the grind! Pixel Day has come and gone with tons of entries celebrating its 6th Year here on Newgrounds. The Flash Forward Jam deadline has been extended to the end of February. We have a lot of new users, many who are artists to welcome. Two famous Newgrounds animators were named User of the Day and a whole lot more. Without further ado, here are the hip happenings of Newgrounds last week.

Good Morning Newgrounds! I hope you're all doing well. We are well into the new year and there's a lot of work to be done towards preserving the past. Let us not forget the new that is coming forth either. Flash was the foundation for Newgrounds, it is gone though. It is important to preserve the legacy, Newgrounds is one of the only sites I know that is keen on preservation of its content. It is also important though to remember we are in the now. Even just five years ago we have had submissions not based in Flash. In the adoption of a new term for both Flash Movies and Flash Games, are now just Movies and Games. This may expand going forward, and that is promising. We must ascertain where we are now though. The problems of the future are now today. There is a lot to be done and a lot to celebrate! Enjoy your morning Newgrounds!
January 12, 2021 marked the official day of Flash dying. It is no longer supported and thanks to updates through Microsoft, it won't even run in Windows. @dclxvi-satan has been developing a workaround to help support the implemented Newgrounds Player run Flash until more are Ruffle enabled. A personal favorite of mine from @Jazza. The Composer is an incredible story of a young boy's musical journey, from playing piano as a means of escape, to playing on the streets, a concert pianist, and then a maestro leading an orchestra. To just playing piano after his career fades. One of Newgrounds finest works from Josiah Brooks.
"The song was written for the animation. The writing process for this one is a lot different to anything else and the biggest reason was because it was ART, made not for any intent of success but only for personal expression. I had a lot going on at the time, and excuse me for getting personal but my parents started down the slope that lead to divorce and when it felt like my world was crashing around me, I had only music to comfort me. Writing songs by myself. well at one point in time it wasnt enough. I needed to SEE what i felt and that resulted in :the Composer:, 3 months of work, simple animation to a thought out soundtrack. It's success STILL amazes me because I submitted it during madness day/week and on the day after the finale to the xombie series, so in my eyes it didnt stand a chance, but I knew why I made it and was very happy with the result. Well it didnt get front page at first but soon enough the score kept rising and it ended up not only on the front page but on the top spot on the 'all time' list on Newgrounds. WOW! I had never been on that list with ANYTHING let alone something I never expected to reach it!! I was blown away and SO humbled by that. SO many emails and heartfelt connections that really mean a lot to me. Newgrounds has a heart! Who knew it! haha."

As of right now I am on vacation from my day job. The goal this week is to catch up on a lot of Newgrounds stuff and just relax. I was beginning to have burn out at work. "Way back in elementary school, I’d say at the age of 11 or 12, I used to spend my class time doodling little Mega-Man-style levels for video games I dreamt of making some day. A couple of my friends got into it too, but none of them were very good at drawing and the pictures they penned for me were horrible. I mean really bad. One such drawing that someone showed me was a dinosaur of some kind, maybe a brontosaurus, but where its head should have been was a circular smiley face. The drawing was so bad and yet so hilarious that I have never forgotten it. Blockhead somehow spawned as a mockery of that drawing. I started to make little notebook paper comics featuring the character all through my early teens. Then I brought the character back for a few weeks at the age of 18. He made his final return as a Flash cartoon in ’05.
I was intimidated when I submitted my first Blockhead toon to Newgrounds. I expected that a few people out there like myself would think it was hilarious but that the majority of folks wouldn’t give it much thought. I never expected my work to have actual fans. The support of those fans is really what’s helped the series to improve. To any Newgrounds user who has ever wondered if their reviews can be helpful: they are! I owe a lot to the people who took the time to tell me what they liked about my cartoons as well as what they didn’t."

I missed some week's of the Tribune due to not only the holidays, but some wonderful events have happened. My best friend who moved to Texas around four years ago is moving back to South Carolina. This is an exciting time. My little brother also got married recently. He's in the army and in Colorado, but is also looking to move back to South Carolina as well after his service is done. My other little brother had a baby making me an uncle! There has been a lot going on at once and it is all exciting! Naturally I have been away from my writings on Newgrounds because of this. I apologize for that. Here's to getting everything back on track and a bright and beautiful future!

With the holidays and the season of giving underway, Tom is giving out drawing tablets. This is a special event that has been going on for the past couple of days ago. The tablet is the XP-Pen Deco 01 V2. If you are an aspiring artist who is interested then PM Tom with the following information.

There is no specified number of tablets that will be given away, if you want to raise the amount given then please consider Supporting Newgrounds. PM Tom afterwards to state your donation towards this giveaway. This isn't the first time Newgrounds has taken on a project like this. Tom gave away Wacom Tablets on different occasions in the past.
Tom started to toy around with the next jam being about Flash. Drawing Tablet Winner @Dungeonation made a large donation in favor of the Jam. There is now over $1000 in the prize pool alongside an interview with @TheInterviewer for the winners of Best Movie and Best Game. There is also a Bonus $100 to Most Mobile-Friendly version, no matter where it places.
Jam Requirements:
Make something interactive with Flash, either a game or interactive movie, which could include an animation collab with a cool menu interface, or something with decisions / alternate endings.
Make it with ActionScript 2 and confirm it works via Ruffle before publishing. You will see a “Test with Ruffle” link on your preview page. Ruffle is what we use to run Flash on NG without the Flash plugin, you can read more about it below!
Upload any time in January and tag it “Flash-Forward-Jam” to participate!
Ruffle updates have added thumbnails behind the play button. A lot of old flashes will need larger thumbnails to accommodate this new update. The movie hub itself is also upgrading to large thumbnails. Tom is looking to add new Icon Moderators so if you're looking to help out then let him know in this thread and he may reach out to you.
Pico has been added as a playable character in FRIDAY NIGHT FUNKIN'! Check it out if you haven't already. He comes with his own theme song that you can hear in this morning's Phonograph.
A new map will be added to Among Us. The airship. A map that is modeled after the airship from the Henry Stickmin series entry Infiltrating the Airship. A new song was added for the trailer which you can hear in this morning's Phonograph! Among Us also won Best Multiplayer and Best Mobile Game in the Game Awards this year! The Newgrounds Podcast recently talked to two people behind the Fraymaker's game. From the beginnings of Super Smash Flash, to Fraymakers and the art contest.
@xalezar has made some huge updates to his game Nymble. If you haven't played it yet then give it a shot. It's been tweaked and more feedback will be appreciated.
Levels 41 to 60 now unlocked! Skip to the boss level or play them all again. (You may find some little surprises.)
Improved level cleared UI to explain how to get a higher score. I thought about including this in the HUD (Heads-up display), but opted to keep it clean and minimal and have the player find out by exploring.
Level 3, updated to better onboard the player about how to kill enemies.
Level 20 (boss): Same level, just replaced some gates, and reduced map size
Level 40 (boss): Some modified puzzles as well as a more exploratory layout.
Levels 51, 52, 54: New designs to onboard the "snowman" a bit more clearly. Slight improvement in puzzle complexity.
Level 60 (boss): redesigned the "snowman" puzzle. The boss fight spawn tiles have been redesigned to have a clearer active/inactive state.
Partially fixed stacking sound-effects glitch.
Toggle the snow by pressing "P" and see if it reduces lag in your browser.

@Popeofdope created this club back in 2004. Over 16 years ago. It was a club for stoner's to join, share stories, music, and of course, drugs. With recreational marijuana being legalized and/or decriminalized in multiple places it might be time to bring this club back to life.
Welcome back to the Newgrounds Kitchen. With the holidays coming around the corner, feeding a lot of people can be difficult and time consuming. This recipe is for my own Pot Roast. A recipe that can feed your family gathering or if friends and family are isolating, it can be made in advance and shared!
The-Great-One's Pot Roast
INGREDIENTS
2 pounds chuck roast
1 cup red wine
1/3 cup Worcestershire Sauce
1/3 cup Balsamic Vinegar
1 large carrot chopped
1 celery stalk chopped
1 medium onion chopped
6 cloves of garlic crushed
2 large Russet Potatoes cut into fours (you can substitute fingerling potatoes)
1 tablespoon Italian Seasoning
2 tablespoons corn starch
ground cumin
Kosher salt
4 tablespoons butter cut into fours
fresh rosemary stalks
lard
STEP 1: Liberally rub both sides of the chuck with ground cumin and salt.
STEP 2: Place a pan over high heat. Once it's hot, place the chuck directly into the pan. Sear for 2 minutes or until brown.
STEP 3: Flip and sear the other side for 3 minutes or until brown. Remove from pan and set aside. Add 1 tablespoon of lard to the pan.
STEP 4: Turn the heat down to medium and add your onion and garlic. Cook until onion is softened.
STEP 5: Add the carrot, Worcestershire Sauce, Balsamic Vinegar, and red wine. Bring to a simmer then add the corn starch. Cook until slightly thickened.
STEP 6: In the cooking vessel of your choice, add the potatoes at the bottom and 1/2 of the liquid from the pan. Place your chuck roast in and the other 1/2 of the liquid. Whatever you're cooking in set it to low or 200 degrees for at least 4 hours.
STEP 7: Add your rosemary and butter to your roast and cook for another 4 hours.
STEP 8: Remove everything from the vessel onto your final serving platter and let rest for 5-10 minutes before carving.

This week went a lot smoother than last week. No Internet problems on this end. I really need to look into a way to format this better. Then again I wish I could just schedule a news post to post automatically. That kind of a system though could be easily abused though so I understand why it isn't implemented. Would make things a lot easier on my end though. Perhaps when we get a Literature Portal this paper can really stretch its wings and I can just upload an entire PDF file with links already to go. Good Morning Newgrounds! I hope your morning has gone better than mine. It started off well, I had this whole paper ready to go, I was right at the end posting the Patreon wall, when the page froze and thus everything was gone. I had to walk away before putting a fist through the monitor. I lost quite a bit in the process so this is an attempted salvage. Sorry for the inconvenience. With that said the holidays are approaching, Christmas is in full swing and Hanukkah will be starting this Thursday! Here's all the hip happenings of Newgrounds last week.
With the holidays and the season of giving underway, Tom is giving out drawing tablets. This is a special event that has been going on for the past couple of days ago. The tablet is the XP-Pen Deco 01 V2. If you are an aspiring artist who is interested then PM Tom with the following information.

@VoicesByCorey has released the NGVAC 2020. If you missed it, go listen to it. Be prepared though, it is over an hour and a half long. He has already started on plans for NGVAC 2021, so if you're interested check out the thread.
Tom asks that you watch the video below concerning Section 230. It is a part of the Common Decency Act of 1996 that President Donald Trump wishes to revoke. Which this is not a partisan issue, because President-Elect Joe Biden also wishes to revoke Section 230. They feel it will help crack down on social media platforms for spreading misinformation and propaganda, when in actuality it will do the opposite and hurt the voices of many on the Internet. This is something to keep an eye on in the coming months. Just in case you need to contact your representative.
Tom started to toy around with the next jam being about Flash. Drawing Tablet Winner @Dungeonation made a large donation in favor of the Jam. There is now over $1000 in the prize pool alongside an interview with @TheInterviewer for the winners of Best Movie and Best Game. There is also a Bonus $100 to Most Mobile-Friendly version, no matter where it places.
Jam Requirements:
Make something interactive with Flash, either a game or interactive movie, which could include an animation collab with a cool menu interface, or something with decisions / alternate endings.
Make it with ActionScript 2 and confirm it works via Ruffle before publishing. You will see a “Test with Ruffle” link on your preview page. Ruffle is what we use to run Flash on NG without the Flash plugin, you can read more about it below!

A LOOK BACK AT THREADS OF THE PAST
EVERYTHING, BY EVERYONE
I've been going down memory lane as of late and came across a time in Newgrounds where some important questions were asked. This part of the Forum History is going to get a little heavy, so this is your READER DISCRETION ADVISED part of the paper. I think it is important to talk about and reflect on.
First some context though. On April 16, 2007, a shooting occurred at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. It was labelled as a massacre with 33 fatalities. At the time it was one of the deadliest shootings in the United States of America. This was a tragic event and should not be taken lightly. Newgrounds member @PiGPEN made a game entitled V-tech Rampage recreating the event. This would cause a bit of a stir within the media and thus @Ross commented on it.
Ross brought up the game and its creator. How it circulated among the popular gaming websites and media outlets at the time. PiGPEN stated that if people donated enough money to his PayPal he would take it down. Ross asked the Newgrounds public what they thought about the game, did they think PiGPEN's actions were in poor taste, and should the game be taken down or left up?
Ross would follow up on this development with responses from the Newgrounds community. Ranging from remove it outright for its offensive content. It is in poor taste that PiGPEN is looking to profit off of it, remove it for that. It is freedom of speech so it must be kept up. There are far more offensive things on the site as it is, so just leave it up. Ross read all of these and thought about it more and more. His response was thus...
"I think this is a good time to reflect on what Newgrounds is all about. When Tom first started the site many years ago, it was a place for his personal creations, some of which were too "edgy" for the mainstream (such as Assassin, Club A Seal, and Telebubby Fun Land). Many of his productions pushed (and occasionally pole vaulted over) the limits of "good taste", but he published them nevertheless, and they found an audience. The number of NG visitors grew rapidly and soon other artists started sending Tom their Flash creations for him to post. It turned out that a lot of people didn't really have an outlet for their not-fit-for-the-mainstream creativity - and Newgrounds evolved from a showcase for Tom's work into a showcase for everyone's work, free of the usual moral judgement and censorship.
Newgrounds found its niche and flourished, and today, we have one of the most unique communities on the Internet. We're a place where you can find polished, professional-quality animations and games, as well as creations that are more coarse, more personal, more "anything goes" - and everybody's welcome. While we do have some loose content guidelines, the site is still a haven for artists that might not have anyplace else to gain exposure for their work.
Speaking only for myself, I think V-Tech Rampage is in poor taste. In terms of gameplay, it's decent, but tying it to this recent tragedy is a bad idea, in my opinion.
Still, it's not any one person's job to judge the Flash that people submit to The Portal. That's left up to the Newgrounds community at large, which judges submissions with its votes. As the saying goes, I may disagree with what PiGPEN's doing, but I'll forever defend his right to do it. Telling him that his game should not be allowed on Newgrounds goes against the principles upon which this site was founded. You're entitled to form any opinion you like about him and his work, but once we take away his right to put it here on NG, we lose track of what makes Newgrounds great."

During this time the guidelines were strict. They have since been updated. This includes that if you are making light of or exploiting a tragedy Newgrounds may or may not stand by you. They have defended stuff in the past, but it is no longer a guarantee. This is indeed a wonderful thing about Newgrounds, and this was in 2007 when Newgrounds was about to hit this boom period on the Internet, when more and more people were not only getting access to the Internet, but it was becoming more user friendly, and content was strong. Newgrounds was one of few websites that escaped the dot com burst.
Around this time, Tom was getting married to his fiancée at the time @AprilFulp. He would return from his honeymoon with a message about the site.
Tom was feeling defeated. Every plan he had he was always a bit too late or there were always problems. This was around when the 2007 re-design was about to come out. It was being worked on for years. This was a huge deal for the site.
"Underneath the smiles and positive attitude, I'll admit I've been in a bad mood lately.
The honeymoon was the first time in a long while that I really decompressed from a life that revolves around Newgrounds, a life where every waking (and sleeping) hour feels dedicated to the vision of what Newgrounds is supposed to become. As a result, it stirred up a lot of intense feelings about where things are going wrong and how there aren't any clear solutions other than "work harder." (working smarter doesn't cut it for me) Rather than coming back refreshed and full of energy, I feel like I'm being crushed under the weight of failed expectations and lost opportunities.
Newgrounds will be celebrating its 12th anniversary on the web next month, so it's a crazy time to reflect on where Newgrounds has gone in the past 12 years and where it hasn't. The web wasn't ready for a lot of the things we tried to do in the early days. Back in 2000, we had an embedded NG player you could put on your own site. It included an integrated voting bar and even had an integrated ad, but no one was interested in embedding stuff back then; Myspace didn't exist yet. We built a universal high score system and used it for a bunch of games, but it kept getting hacked, so we gave up. Inspired by the launch of Friendster, we laid out user pages before they had REALLY caught fire, but even that plan just sort of sat on the curb as years passed by... Waiting for the next layout design, then the next."
I always feel like we missed our moment in the spotlight and the Internet passed us by, not quite ready for NG until it was too late and the whole "Web 2.0" hype stole their attention.
What's especially crushing is all the projects that remain yet unfinished. Newgrounds is like 10 years behind schedule from where it's supposed to be right now. It started off so fast and loose, making games and launching features in such rapid succession. Then the games got bigger and the features more complex, and nothing could be done quickly anymore. Good ideas can no longer just be tossed into the mix like they once were, they have to wait until the other good ideas are finished, even if it takes months... or years. Other console games can't happen until Castle Crashers is done. Other web games can't happen until Pixel Puncher is done. Nothing on the site can happen until the redesign is done. Meanwhile, new ideas keep bubbling up every day. I don't know what to do about it so I just get mad about it and loath myself.
But I'll say one thing: NG never stops moving. The redesign has been a part of our daily lives ever since the office opened at the end of 2005. It's VERY CLOSE. It will be the opening of a door that we've been knocking on for years now. When that door is opened, we're gonna step out into a new era of NG and lots of good stuff will start to happen around here. Or not... maybe it will just be the same old portal spam and eDrama. I can't make any promises, I'm just trying to be uplifting and get everyone excited. It's harder and harder for me to get excited about stuff because exciting stuff takes too much work. I need to vicariously live through your own excitement and smiling faces. Go team."

This was when Newgrounds turned 12 years old. It is now 25 years old and growing. It wasn't long after this that Tom got an incredible response from the different creators and members of the site. This was when he announced the Tank Trophies. If there is one way to sum up Newgrounds entirely it is from the creator of the site himself.

With Flash going out the door by the end of December, there is still a lot of work being done. Most of Newgrounds new stuff isn't in Flash anymore though. A lot of games run on HTML5 and movies can be uploaded in a multitude of formats. Ruffle is being used to run Flash content in browser without Flash, a project being worked on by @mike here on Newgrounds. Thankfully though for content that isn't being run on Ruffle yet, there is the Newgrounds Player to run different movies and games on desktop, unfortunately this is not possible on mobile as of yet.
The Internet Archive is now using Ruffle which is bringing more attention to the project as a whole and hopefully to Newgrounds as well. Consider supporting Ruffle if you have the time or the money, I know it is challenging with not only everything going on in the world right now, but with the holidays coming up as well, so don't feel despair if you can't.
To celebrate this time, Tom has been making a Flash Showcase. Movies and games that were once Flash, but are Flash no more. These will be added to a playlist in the Archive within the coming days.
Tom has put out a reminder to artists and animators out there to not use unlicensed stock photos in your works. They are owned by licensing agencies who expect payment and will go to court over them. Tom had to remove a piece after an infringement suit. Please do not do it. This also goes for music. You can't use unlicensed music in your works either, it will be taken down. Newgrounds has been bringing the hammer down on a lot of old submissions because of this. There is a list of Royalty Free Music options out there including Newgrounds own Audio Portal.
January 23rd will be the sixth annual Pixel Day. A holiday created by @JohnnyGuy it is a celebration of pixel art. If you would like to contribute to the prize pool this year then please donate and PM Tom so he can put you down as one of the sponsors. mike has been a driving force behind Newgrounds for a long time. He is the creator of Swivel. A free program that allows you to convert Flash to different file formats. He worked alongside @The-Swain and @Afro-Ninja on Skincraft. Now he has been hard at work on Ruffle. He is literally working on preserving the history of Newgrounds. It is a project that has grown exponentially to the point where it is being used to preserve Flash on the entirety of the Internet.
The slot machine game that was featured at the top of Newgrounds during April Fools Day 2016 has lost its Supporter Perks. Supporters would occasionally get WILDS on the slot machine.
@Aaron-Long wrote an article about how an animation changed him. The animation in question is the 2004 cult Masaaki Yuasa movie Mind Game. You can read his article here.

There will be a change in the scheduling for my projects going forward. The Interviewer will be picking back up with a new interview this Wednesday. There will be a set schedule going forward with Monday being the new day for The Tribune. With my work on Sundays I can not put the time and effort into getting this paper out to you on Sunday and finding time to sleep anymore. Saturdays and Sundays will be my days off from writing going forward so I can just relax and enjoy Newgrounds, which I haven't been able to do as of late. The only time I got to enjoy the site truly was reading the entries for the Halloween Writing Contest and listening to The Newgrounds Podcast. It will be nice to have two days where I can just browse the site again. I need to get back into writing reviews. That has been sorely neglected for quite sometime now. Perhaps it's time to jump back into the Review Request Club. We will see. Thank you all for your patience and understanding. It has been rough, but I think I got my day job and projects under control now.

The holidays have begun. My work tends to get hit during November and December, with relatives coming in, people just grabbing something quick instead of cooking in the arrival of Thanksgiving. Holiday Shopping and everything else. For some reason copying a Newgrounds URL just pastes the title of the movie, audio, art, or game now instead of just giving us this nifty clickable icon. Good Morning Newgrounds! Work has been exhausting lately and I've been getting thrown on doubles each Sunday. I may have to move the day for the Tribune so I can have more time to work on it and get it posted. I was thinking about Saturday. This change won't occur until after Thanksgiving though. This is another short issue which I am deeply sorry about. Just a few highlights and that is all I got due to my day job. Tonight and Monday I will be playing catch up on a lot of my projects. My apologies on this issue.

The week can get people down sometimes. With all of the hustle and bustle and action packed drama that entails our lives, sometimes it's nice to just kickback and relax.
My day job has been exhausting the past week. I am thankful that I was able to get this much done with the paper. The election over here in the United States was also a painful combination of stressful and exciting. I'm not sure where things are going, but we will always have Newgrounds. Thanks for reading and continuing to read. I am deeply sorry that I couldn't dedicate a lot of time to this week's issue. I plan on making that up. Expect the next issue on Thanksgiving Day.
