Monthly Update February 2022

@BenTibbetts has a monthly update. He's been playing as a piano accompanist for University Interscholastic League Events. He has also been playing for Trinity Church of Austin and the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin. You can hear the Trinity recordings here. New project and a little announcement!!!

@TemptyOne has been hard at work on multiple projects. They release two games that you have probably spotted on the Front Page. Heroes Quest and BitBattle and Heroes Quest. They're newest game in the works is entitled Blood, Guns & Chips. It is inspired by Katana Zero and Hotline Miami. It is still in early development. March Updates - NGA / GDC / Robeats / Welkin/Skyworld game!

@Waterflame has posted some updates. If you want the full scoop just watch the video. If you want the skinny, it's this. Waterflame is going to be at this year's GDC (Game Developers Conference). He'll have a booth there and is a finalist in the GDC Pitch Competition. If you're in the San Francisco, CA area then the event will be between March 21-25. He will be on the judges panel for the Norwegian Game Awards. The awards show will be on March 31! Robeats has licensed his music. The project he has been working on Welkin/Skyworld is coming to fruition! Waterflame has also surpassed 250,000 monthly listeners on Spotify!

If you want a game that will make you rage, then this is the one to bring your blood to a boil. I will give this tidbit to new players. Try not to use your Skips. That is all I will say.

While I was browsing Newgrounds, I did come across a lot of joy and happiness. Tons of work. People working together on huge projects. Big things happening for some of Newgrounds best. Many I call friend here on the site. I was looking to showcase more of the underrated creators on Newgrounds and I hope I have done that here today. However, I came across people who are not doing too well. Whether they have hit the bottom with their work, they're suffering from burnout, or life in general has just gotten them down. I have reached out to them, and I hope the friends I have pointed some of them too can help out. If you're a creator reading this, whether you're doing great or feeling underwhelmed about your work. I have posted another video here. It is from CGPGrey when the pandemic just started out. I think the lessons it teaches are still just as important today. Be sure to take care of yourself so you can keep your spaceship running. If you are suffering from burnout, use this as an opportunity to not only recover, but browse Newgrounds as well. Connect with other creators. Chat and make friends. You'll get that itch again before you know it and have tons of ideas. If you're don't know why your works aren't being noticed or think they're good enough. Visit the respected forum in the Community. Make friends there. Talk about your works. You'll be surprised at how much you discover. Newgrounds is an incredibly welcoming and friendly place for animators, artists, musicians, voice actors, writers, game developers, programmers, coders, beta testers, and just about anything else you can think of. If you also want to get your works more noticed, enter a contest that is coming up. There are always prizes in some shape or form. If anything, it will definitely get more eyes on your works. I think that is all I can say in this matter. If you want help or are still unsure about anything about Newgrounds, then pop a thread in the Where is / How to / Help! or just Send Me a PM. Good Morning Newgrounds! The Tank Tribune has surpassed 600 Followers! Thank you to all of my readers out there. We did it. We have reached 50 issues of The Tank Tribune! While working on this issue I was going back through the past issues and reminiscing. Seeing the first issue and what it has become is incredible. It is all thanks to you. Thank you to my Patrons over on Patreon. Special thanks to @rtil, @Cyberdevil, @SevenSeize, and @TomFulp for all of your unwavering support for The Tank Tribune. With that said, milkypossum has dominated the Top 5 Audio. We celebrate the team behind Olive's Art-Venture. @ninjamuffin99 was interviewed. Expanding/Improving the File Dump

@CyrusOfNaias is looking to upgrade his Supporter plan to $4.99 and is asking the question if there any developmental plans in the future to expand the storage space of the Dumping Grounds. Tom has considered making the Dump a Supporter only feature going forward due to storage costs of giving out free storage to every account. It also makes it anonymous to help prevent those who would abuse it to harm other users or the site. The same idea is being considered for image sharing VIA PM system. There are also talks about multi-author being made available in the Art Portal. If you're an artist interested in gathering people together for a collage collaboration, then be on the lookout for Tom's next post.

BOSS RUSH GAME

@Thecrispychannel is working on a Boss Rush game. The Tank Tribune was able to talk to him about it and he was kind enough to give us a synopsis as well as some design art.

"It's a boss rush game heavily inspired by sonic, crash bandicoot, kao the kangaroo, donkey kong country, banjo kazooie, kirby, mega man, cuphead and other games. The game is going to have 10 levels, the bosses range in size, difficulty, and overall theme. You have 2 attacks, a basic punch and an up kick. You can also fly/glide using your big ears, which is why the character's name is Hiko which roughly means flying/flight in Japanese."

Short Film UPDATE!!

@MarcoCardenas has been working on a short film for a long time now. It is called Fishman. He has the script, storyboards, score, and voice acting done. He is in the process of animation. He won the Daily Feature award for UNDER INSPECTION and shared a Daily Feature award with @SrPelo and other collaborators on Newgrounds for Spooky Month 4 - Deadly Smiles. Kill Boe Collab

One of Newgrounds biggest supporters, @Noodle, is forming a collaboration based on his first game Kill Boe. A simple stick figure game where you kill the titular character Boe. The collab will feature thirty shorts about five to thirty seconds in length. If you're an animator and have interest in joining a collab on Newgrounds then read more in the Kill Boe Collab Thread. The deadline is March 15th. Noodle has also been known for the YouTube series This Week on Newgrounds as well as a series on Flash Games.

Life update c:

@Permian-Extinction has been off the site for a while. There are some good reasons as to why though. They became the featured artist for March at a coffee shop they draw at. Five original pieces will be on sale at the coffee shop. Permian-Extinction has also done some album art for a big band they like. Under an NDA though they aren't allowed to show off the work or even state the name of the band. We are eagerly waiting for Permian-Extinction to hear back from the recording label. They're also now an apprentice at Hybrid Image Tattoo in Cincinnati. Hopefully we can coax @ZJ into getting a Newgrounds Tank tattoo. Permian-Extinction is back to their full-time job and working at the tattoo shop on the weekends so there will be less posted to Newgrounds.

Back before we had the Supporter Features there was Newgrounds Secrets. These were unlocked after leveling up to higher levels. There were old movies that were taken down due to legal reasons. Involving the Smurfs and Charlie Brown. There was also a game you could play made by Tom entitled The Last Piece of Cake. Tom has tweaked it for today and released it to the public. This game was released back in 2000 and can now be played by everyone!

@ChillyAbe is new to the site. He knew the site for having Madness Combat, Dad n' Me, and Riddle School. He is learning HTML and CSS and draws occasionally. His favorite series on the site are Madness Combat, Brackenwood, Pico, and Riddle School.

@FrostPen is a new artist, animator, and musician here on the site. He came from a website called Scratch. He left because he couldn't tolerate the community anymore. He likes that Newgrounds is more open and mature. Check out some of his works below!

50 Issues. Over 600 Fans. That is incredible. Thank you all so much to those who come back here every week to read the paper and sticking it out with me through the trials and tribulations that consumed my life. I can't believe I'm actually in a good place in my life right now. That I'm able to be here with you this morning to share the news with you. To be doing The Interviewer and sharing the stories of the famous artists and members of Newgrounds. I feel like I should always be doing more, I don't want to overwhelm myself though between my day job and Newgrounds. It is a pleasure to be with you on Sunday mornings and now on Monday mornings. I also want to thank @sorohanro for allowing me to use the different versions of his song Paper Dragon as the theme song for The Tank Tribune. Ever since I heard those songs I always wanted to use them for something, but I never knew what. I feel it is fitting here. I hope that people will look to those songs the same way they say Light Orchestral Loop as The Interviewer theme. In a similar sense that Endless Handbag Loop is Newgrounds theme. Thank you all again for reading. I'll see you next Monday.

Good Morning Newgrounds! I hope you all had a fantastic twosday last week. While I was working on this issue as I'm sure you have heard and seen by now, Russia has invaded the Ukraine. Now I try to keep politics out of this paper since it not only serves as a catch-up on Newgrounds, but as a way to escape from reality. Unfortunately though I need to bring this to attention, because for the United States of America where Newgrounds is based at, we are having a problem that I will address in the General News section. Legislation is trying to be snuck through that could affect not only Newgrounds, but a lot of your favorite sites as well. There has been a lot going on Newgrounds recently. With the series X-RL7, Chaotic Heart, and Solace. Two scary collabs, one being Resident Evil 2 and the other being Newgrounds Creepypasta. Fro having trouble with Twitter and reminiscing about his days as an Uber driver. Wegra has popped back up in the Tribune. The EARNIT Act Is a Threat to Online Privacy, Encryption, AND (Ironically) Children Safety

@Enigma2Me has brought something to our attention. A new bill that was proposed and shelved back in 2020 has resurfaced with new additions that could threaten a lot of the Internet including Newgrounds. Here's a short description from Enigma2Me below.

It's an online censorship and mass surveillance act that was introduced 2 years ago by Senator Blumenthal and Graham, and is supposedly about protecting children online dealing with material that is deemed “unsafe for children”. But various online privacy groups and human rights groups such as the ACLU and Fight For the Future have noted that it not only doesn't protect children, it actually makes them LESS safe while being heavily aimed at attacking encryption. This was bad enough at the time in 2020 that it was fiercely rejected and was essentially shelved. But now it’s been re-introduced, and as far as we can tell, with no improvements or changes (it’s actually even WORSE this time around). No doubt hoping to take advantage of people's complacency and other current hot topics as a distraction to push it through under the radar.

We need to take a stand against this as soon as possible. The quicker the better. Follow the link to the thread to learn more. There are notes about how to put a stop to this.

February News and Announcements!

A lot has happened during the month of February. Here are some highlights from the news from Tom.

The /tilt/ - Competition Results were announced. /tilt/ was created by @brin-o and @Droqen, with music by @ComposerEvans. The top 3 of the 13 found some exploits and bugs that they told the creators. They are @Gytbug, @FinnOrFelicity, @an-original-Joke. If you haven't played /tilt/ yet now is a good time!

The Flash Forward Jam

The deadline for the Flash Forward Jam has been extended to March 13th to March 27th. Some may need this extension, if you're one of them then please let Tom know. If enough people need more time, then more may be provided.

MessyPaints February Challenge

The theme for the MessyPaints challenge this month is to paint Q and Elena from Street Fighter. The deadline is March 1st, that's next week! @DoctorGrambo started this challenge earlier this year. He was a Featured Artist in Issue NO. 41 of The Tank Tribune.

Resident Evil 2 Reanimated Collab

@BadTwinZ started a reanimated collab for Resident Evil 2 back in December 2021. There are still 20 scenes left to animate. The deadline has been extended to March 31st. BadTwinZ lead the Resident Evil REANIMATED Collab for the first game if you're an animator if you want to know what the collab may be like.

Creepypasta Collab

@squide, @TechoCookie, and @NewGroundDan are starting a collaboration for Creepypasta. All Portals are open to participation. There are some rules to the collab. @CrockettDK, an artist and musician here on Newgrounds has shown interest in the collab. @chitstain has offered his voice acting talents to the collab as well. He participated in the 2021 Newgrounds Voice Acting Collaboration. @LilSpook has thrown their name in the ring. They participated in Piconjomas Party 2021. If you an artist, animator, voice actor, musician, and/or game developer then join in the spookiness.

CHAPTER 1 Release! | Nothing Unusual

@TweenAnimations1 has a release date for Chapter 1 of a new series, Nothing Unusual. The second trailer debuted back in October 2021. The release date is March 19, 2022! Below is a synopsis of the series from TweenAnimations1.

"In Japan, Rokurokubi are known to be like Vampires. They're known to be dangerous Yōkais for committing horrible deeds. Except for one. Asumi Mayako -- Born a Rokurokubi, now lives a normal life with Karita Dere. Karita takes her time to take care of Asumi ever since that mysterious night where Asumi was found inside a trash can. Asumi has her moments where she's feeling worried about how people feel about her as a Rokurokubi."

@ZeroDigitZ has released his new game earlier this month entitled Two Maniacs Chapter 1. It is a supernatural horror game. The premise is the town Rock Hill is under lockdown due to a serial killer. You can play between two characters. Arlo a detective who is after the serial killer, and Tess, a young woman looking for her friend after she fears she may be in danger. The music is made by ZeroDigitZ with one track being in the Phonograph this morning. If you haven't played it yet, now is the time!

Smugglers of Ambektra Progress

@W-P-S has been a bit silent on Newgrounds as of late. He's given us an update on his newest project. Smugglers of Ambektra. Here is a short synopsis below.

It's going to be an Africa-themed sci-fi adventure. Two smugglers, Nasbid and Leopold, try and smuggle booze and porn into a military junta, and have to cross hostile deserts and jungles to get there. DANGER, PERIL AND ADVENTURE AWAITS

It may take a few years to finish. The wait will be worth it though. W-P-S music video, Juh Jee Juh Boo Boo, won Best Animated Short at the 2021 Boobs and Blood Festival in Hollywood. Congratulations to W-P-S!

New Job!

@Buster98 got a new job as a storyboard revisionist. He's been working on a new cartoon, which may be delayed due to working full time now. One of his goals is to become an independent creator and live off his own work. He wants to make cartoons that people like and make them often. @9Hammer has appreciated the feedback from Chaotic Hearts Season 1 finale, Chaotic Heart: Strike the Core (Episode 5), and Solace: In Mind. Season 2 of Chaotic Hearts should be debuting this Summer, so mark your calendars. The next episode of Solace is in the works is looking to be released sometime in March! Back in 2009, Tom Fulp announced an idea, called the Power of Three. It was a summer event where a teams of three would collaborate to make a game. A programmer, an artist, and a musician. One such game that came out of this was Toss the Turtle. With programmer @Foreverkul, artist @Gonzossm, and musician @MaestroRage. It was an idea that brought a lot of great games to the site, but Toss the Turtle became a phenomenon on Newgrounds and beyond. It won a Daily Feature and Weekly 1st Place for its creators. It now has a life outside of Newgrounds under the name Super Toss the Turtle on mobile!

Daily Diary of an Uber Driver

Before the Father of Forums @Fro was a professional weightlifting champion of the universe, he was an Uber Driver. He recounts his tales in the Writing Forum. One as a writing exercise, and two to make some extra money.

"This was one of my attempts of trying to write something small every day. It was a lot of fun while it lasted. I knew it would eventually get repetitive and that I would eventually need to cut out customers because of the repetitive nature of most of the rides. The reason I stopped writing was because I stopped driving. The reason I stopped driving was because I had reached a financial goal and it was starting to get stressful.

Basically I had taken up driving Uber as a second job to help pay for our moving expenses. We moved across country, east coast to west coast. It took quite a bit of my savings away and I needed help catching back up. So I drove Uber for a bit. I had forgot that there was a sign up bonus when I first started. You were guaranteed to make a certain amount in your first 100 trips. If you didn’t make that amount you got the difference in a lump sum after your 100th trip.

After a bad day of driving, a few short trips, not a lot of riders in the night, and witnessing multiple car accidents while driving I was basically an emotional wreck. I had just witnessed a man get hit while riding a motorcycle. The car that hit him sped off and the cars behind him literally beeped for the man to hurry up and get off of the ground out of their way.

It was very disturbing…

Then that lump sum hit. It was substantial. I think $700 give or take a little. I retired from driving Uber on the spot and went home. I don’t think I would do it again."

I finally have my organizational system setup the way I want it. It has taken a number of years to be able to juggle multiple projects, but I figured it out. Good Morning Newgrounds! You might be wandering where I've been. Through a series of damaged wrists, holidays, getting sick, battling with depression, getting used to my new job, and @Anonymous-Frog ordering that hit on me by the mafia, it's been a whirlwind for sure. A lot has been going on and I'm afraid I won't be able to recap the past couple of months. I'm looking to pick up here in February and move on. Fro lifted all the things. We remember Hyakugojyuuichi!!. The Politics Forum hung on the edge of deletion. GraysonA has made his valiant return. Piconjo celebrated Valentine's Day and officially announced it as Epic Kiss Day. Closing the Politics Forum?

The Politics forum has seen some heavy intake in drama recently. Tom has been debating whether or not a Politics forum is still necessary with the evolution of Newgrounds focusing more on works of art. Some believe in shutting down the Politics forum and keeping any fire that spreads to the General forum in line. Others believe it is better to keep the fire contained in the Politics forum. There was from both the regulars of the Politics forum as well as the other forums on the site. Tom has since closed the thread and now there is a Sticky thread in its place. Politics Forum - Read Before Posting. There are now some basic rules to keep in mind when posting in the Politics Forum going forward.

The 100th versions of both of these will be launching soon and there could be trouble for certain websites. Certain websites they have tested this update on have returned a 403 Error and have other bugs involved. If you have Microsoft Edge on your computer or use a different browser entirely then you should be fine. If you don't then now would be the time to have a backup just in case. The original version of this track was being made for an OST for a game by his friend. 0ldm4nn modified it to this finished product. At the number four spot is Movin Eurodance by @Zanyer. I have been developing a new system for my workflow. This is the test phase for it and judging how this came out it has been a success. I've also played around with the tools and hopefully this issue is easier to read. I will be making adjustments going forward, but now I have the time to think and implement as need be now. It is nice when projects line up well. My new job has me working during the day so I can't really post these at 5AM/6AM like I used to, it has to be around midnight now. Which doesn't affect the early birds and I don't think the night owls will complain. I truly want people though to take to becoming more like ambassadors for the site, especially the longtime users. Which means I will be breaking down and getting a Reddit account. If you're new to the site through Among Us or FRIDAY NIGHT FUNKIN' then please help bring more people to this beautiful site. Good Morning Newgrounds! How are all of you doing? I've been doing fantastic. I've been getting accustomed to my new day job, which is better pay, better hours, and less stressful than my previous job. I'm gonna link The Scale of the Universe here as well due to the impact it made. Scale of the Universe 2 however is updated to include more of the universe. To the part of space we can no longer see all the way down to the smallest level that we can't measure. It is amazing to go through this and click on each piece. One day, a clock (who we won't name due to embarassment) was about to watch a clock movie (again not naming in order to not embarass them), and saw one of the tags that said 'hentai'. Unbeknownst to them, there was no hentai, it was a live performance of some metal music.

"I swear I didn't know what they were talking about. Next time I hung around with my friends, one of them asked if we were going to watch some hentai together. I accepted, still thinking it meant what I saw in that flash. No it didn't, I got the shock of my life and immediately broke into tears.

You know what? I actually feel better about it now. Here's the movie."

When the movie Watchmen came out in 2009, @HappyHarry was commissioned to bring this cartoon intro for the Watchmen to life.

"I had come up with the idea because I believed it could be a big viral hit and because I'm a huge fan of the graphic novel and kids shows from 15-25 years ago, however this time round I decided I didn't want to sell the animation and so I maintained the rights out of choice. The experience was pretty damn tiresome, I churned the thing out in about 3 weeks, song and all. I'm glad people got a kick out of it."

How To Find your first paid project

I wanted to spend this part of Forum History to present a cautionary tale. Newgrounds is one of the most welcoming communities for creators on the Internet. There are a lot of freedoms and people to help you out on your journey to hone your skills, polish your craft, make friends, and build your reputation. It has helped launched many creators that go on to do amazing things outside of Newgrounds. @Egoraptor, the creator of the Awesome Series and renowned animator and voice actor. @Jenjamik, an artist and animator known for Link's Barrel Beat. He would go on to do the animation for the game Cuphead. @Jazza, artist, musician, animator, voice actor, and singer. Known for the PALADIN series here on Newgrounds. He would go on to make a name for himself on YouTube with his Draw With Jazza series. This is just a small fraction.

Each of these people would help other creators on the site. If there was a question in a respective forum. If they got a message. They would answer it. They would leave reviews and give honest feedback and help when and where they could. Many others on this site will do the same. All, without asking for any money. I say this because of this thread.

@mrjeffferson came onto Newgrounds with this thread. He was offering to help people find their first paid project and in return you would pay a small sign up fee. This seemed suspicious to a number of musicians on the site due to him having no music posted on Newgrounds and not much music posted outside of Newgrounds. Some pointed out that he came off more as an agent. He said he wasn't an agent, but was instead offering techniques that would help you. He was preaching himself as a mentor.

@ZipZipper was the first to dress down the OP. It was @samulis who would bury the OP. It is quite the wall of text so I will leave you with appropriate links. Take caution with you. We have people who wish to swoop into Newgrounds a gain a buck. Some just want your work for nothing so keep that mind with you as well. We are a community and we will help one another when and if we can.

Taking a break? (or not)

@midgetsausage may be taking a break due to school. He's also been a bit frail lately. Send some good vibes his way if you can.

Back in 2006 @Egoraptor graced the Internet with Metal Gear Awesome. Something he wanted to work on his voice acting and writing with. It came to inspire countless video game parodies and creators on Newgrounds and beyond.

Well when I was younger I had a lot of self confidence issues (still do), but I always thought the thing I liked to do wasn't what I could make a living out of. I built up enough courage to say, you know what, I think I can make it at this voice acting thing, so I started practicing and doing lines for peoples' cartoons on Newgrounds. I got really addicted to doing a (really bad) Snake impression and I did it for a handful of movies, but then it "dried up" so to speak and I didn't get anymore roles. But I wanted more roles, so I wrote my own script. I wrote it in about 4 or 5 minutes, just banging on the keyboard a bunch of nonsense of how I remember the first hour or so of the game went. I did all the voices and felt satisfied, but for some reason got Kira Buckland to do the voice of Meryl... I guess I just really wanted her to sound feminine and didn't want to use my own voice for her. I think having had her do the voices for me drove me to want to make something out of it, so I mixed it together and trudged through Flash since all my friends were using it. I had no fucking clue what I was doing, but I managed, I guess. I just drew it all bad on purpose 'cause I guess that was the "style" of it, or something. I took a lot of inspiration from Homestar Runner's "The Yellow Dello" because it had a lot of off-model stuff, and I liked that. I thought it was funny. It took me a long time to finish because I kept putting it off, but once I finished it, all my friends urged me to release it on Newgrounds. I was really against it, I thought it would get blammed. It didn't really stack up to any other work on the site I liked, and I thought my humor was a little bit esoteric. Like who the fuck else would think this is funny but me and maybe a handful of other people? But the next day I got an IM, I think it was from Anigen, who told me it was on frontpage, and I was like, uh, what?

Sorry for this issue coming out a little late. I was still wracking my brain around how to handle the Newgrounds Top 40 and featuring audio from the Audio Portal. I like the idea of Member's Choice as well. I feel it can be expanded on a bit though. Still working on that. As of right now though I am on vacation with a lot to catch up here on Newgrounds. I will be one of the judges for two different contests once I get solid confirmation I will let you know. In the meantime enjoy your morning Newgrounds!
