A SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION POST, WOULD BE COOL IF MY ATTEMPT ORGANIZING SPOOKTACULAR 2023 WRITING EVENT WAS MENTIONED IN THE TANK TRIBUNE

@Remi-le-Oduen

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Good Morning Newgrounds! I am sorry that this issue is not as big as it usually is. I didn't have a lot of time to work on it due to what was going on on Newgrounds last week. For more information you can read this post. I had to do some editing, damage control, and work with @Aalasteir. Which by the way, you should go and follow him and listen to all of the interviews he has done on his podcast 90AA. Shoutout to @PsychoGoldfish for all of the hard work he puts into Newgrounds. Without him, there wouldn't be a lot of cool stuff you enjoy here! Today though is a new start. The beginning of Spooky Month and the Spooktacular here on Newgrounds! Halloween is upon us! With that so many contests and events involving all things creepy, scary, spooky, and demented! This issue is also dedicated to @TaintedLogic. A musician on the site who not only has given us so many wonderful tracks over the years. With his tireless dedication to honing his craft and helping with others, the Sunday Phonograph is dedicated to him. Here are the hip happenings of Newgrounds!

@TaintedLogic

Welcome back to the Supporter of the Week! With this section's return, The Tank Tribune has dedicated the paper and this section to TaintedLogic. He is the founder of the Newgrounds Underdogs’ Audio Contest since 2014. He has been a competitor, judge, and host of the Newgrounds Audio Deathmatch, being the host of this year's Deathmatch. He has participated in two of @Ceevro's singalong collaborations, Drive (Singalong) and Barrett's Privateer Singalong. He also wrote poetry for a time. He's been on the site for over ten years now. Thank you TaintedLogic for all you have contributed and done for the site!

"Going through all these memories - old forum posts, reviews, poetry, and songs - only makes me more excited about what the next 10 years will hold. I have another year of graduate school, after which I plan on securing a 9-5 job that will keep my evenings and weekends free. I’ll be keeping a keen eye on Newgrounds as it continues to grow and change, and I want to continue running the NGUAC for the foreseeable future too.

I’m also getting back into the writing forums more actively with a submission or two to the 2nd edition of the Newgrounds Writing Anthology, which is currently in the editing phase. Ask @EKublai for details if you’re interested in participating yourself, but be aware that time to submit is short!

I’ve been rather less prolific with writing music since graduating from college, but I’m still optimistic that this is a temporary phenomenon. Since my summer internship ended last week, I have much more time now to focus on music until school starts on the 31st - in between NGUAC judging phases, at least. But then there’s always school breaks and whatnot. We’ll see…"

Discouraged Artists’ Support Group

@Thetageist has made a thread for artists who feel they’ve lost their motivation, impostor syndrome, and feeling that they're not enough as an artist. I imagine it is also a thread for those feeling burnout, lack of inspiration, and anything else that may bring down the artists’ creativity in this world. If you feel down or wanting to pick someone else up, check out the thread.

Do You Make Karate Noises When You Draw?

@King-Kiddoh has asked an important question. Do you make karate noises when you draw? Some people have responded with making pewpew noises, screeching until the project is done, and just holding into a certain position.

Sorry for the lack of an issue last week, as well as this short issue. I've had a lot going on in September, and my part of my vacation was cut having to take care of some things on Newgrounds. I don't really have too much here for you either. I'll see all of you next week!

DOES THIS TAGLINE HAVE ENOUGH CHARACTERS FOR ME TO RECITE THE TRAGEDY OF DARTH PLAGUEIS THE WISE?

@Anonymous-Frog

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Good Morning Newgrounds! Welcome Back to The Tank Tribune! Last week was a huge issue of The Tank Tribune, with a lot going on here on Newgrounds. Some big news for me, was that a goal I always wanted on Newgrounds. One of the most trivial things you could ever achieve on this site, which took me being on here 17 years to happen, was that I became User of the Day! If you remember the old SOMEBODY IS UOTD thread, then you would know that late in the thread I released the lore that I was searching for this prestigious honor. I finally achieved it! I can retire from Newgrounds forever now! I won't though, there's still a lot to do and plenty of things to experience. The Art Portal got it's much needed update launched. You can multi-author pieces of now, multi-image support is available as well. This is not only great news for comic artists and writers, but for collaborations, contents, the possibilities are endless! jmtb02 has made a return to Newgrounds, with him becoming CEO of Armor Games. Yes, that happened and it is well deserved. The Best of August was voted on and the results are in. The pilot for a new show has premiered! In next week's issue, the Quotes of the Week will be returning to the Community section, and the Supporter section will be returning as well. It just goes to show, you never know what is going to happen on Newgrounds and where it will take you. Without further delay, here are the hip happenings of Newgrounds!

Elephant Rave 2 + Thank you Newgrounds <3

@jmtb02 has made his return to Newgrounds with a sequel to the popular Elephant Rave, with Elephant Rave 2. He has also been working alongside @The-EXP to remaster all of the elephant games into The Elephant Collection on Steam. During his absence, he was an indie developer for Kongregate and is now the CEO of Armor Games. He is also a father of two kids. All of this made him take a step back from game development for a while. We're all happy to see jmtb02 once again. Welcome Back to Newgrounds!

Prepare for Multi-Art / Multi-Author Art

An event that a lot of Newgrounds comic artists has finally happened. Multi-image support is now available in the Art Portal. There's the Inline support, which is an expanded part that Newgrounds has already had, just with more images. Strip support, for comics. As well as a Gallery support for multiple images, which could be useful for mangas. Also, Multi-Author support is available for collaborative efforts. The collages that can come out of this would be incredible.

This week is a little different. Instead of featuring one movie or game, we're taking a look back at 14 of them. All the way back in Issue NO. 15, we took a look back at when the automated Portal was introduced to Newgrounds in 2000. It is the foundation of Newgrounds, to where people can submit their own works to be judged by the members of Newgrounds. One feature that was at the top of the Portal for years was a collection of characters from various Newgrounds movies, games, and series. This was called The Gang. In the @Archive, a collection featuring all of these characters can be seen! Enjoy!

I have a life again, whoops!

@Synami has taken a step back from Newgrounds lately. She's going off to college and looking to becoming a part of society outside of the Internet. The week can get people down sometimes. With all of the hustle and bustle and action packed drama that entails our lives, sometimes it's nice to just kickback and relax. We're going to take a look at some of the art games here on Newgrounds. These games are not meant to be challenging, but either convey a message or be a beautiful experience.

If a game is not loading properly for you, then install the Newgrounds Flash Player. There are instructions on how to do so. If it is still not working or you don't understand, create a thread in the Where is / How to / Help! Forum for assistance.

17 years on Newgrounds. Achieving User of the Day. Becoming a part of Newgrounds History. Many new exciting changes to the site. Having a great job, with vacation time coming up. Spending more time with Rex. Life is truly good. Thank you to my patrons on Patreon, my readers, my friends on Newgrounds, Tom Fulp, and everyone else who has helped me on this 17 year journey that has made me a better writer, a better person, and just an overall better human being. This site can mold you into something incredible. It is certainly true. Next Sunday will be another entry of The Tank Tribune. If things go well though, you can expect something brand new on this account. I've been cooking up some things here and there. I'll see you all next week! Take care and thank you for reading, reacting, and commenting!

@MetalSlayer69

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Good Morning Newgrounds! Welcome to The Tank Tribune! On Newgrounds we have a lot to celebrate! A lot of Newgrounds projects have been celebrating their anniversaries, including myself! Yesterday I celebrated being on Newgrounds for 17 Years. That's nearly two decades. We look back on the Numa Numa Dance, Badgers, and Nyan Cat! The Robot Day winners were announced. The Newgrounds Money Gang is becoming a success with a new Salad Fingers movie on the horizon. Madness Day is creeping up. All of this and so much more! It just goes to show you that there is always something new happening on Newgrounds, made with love and dedication from its creators. I think that's what I like most about Newgrounds. With YouTube creators, there's always this huge team and it feels more marketable than entertaining. With Newgrounds, you know people are growing, improving, and experience this growth while giving the audiences of Newgrounds experiences they will never forget. This truly is a wonderful place to be. I'm glad all of you are here with me - and I'm happy to be here with you. Here are the hip happenings of Newgrounds!

NG Money Gang

Tom is toying around with idea of Newgrounds with disposable income to sponsor projects by big artists. The way it works is that the sponsors would get to decide if their sponsorship would go towards the project for a big artist or pass onto the next project for a different artist. The sponsored project would then be branded with the Newgrounds logo and would debut on Newgrounds one week before going anywhere else. It would also carry that Newgrounds logo elsewhere so it would bring users to the site.

It is like in the old days of Flash, where the Newgrounds preloader would be seen on Flash submissions, if another website swiped it and put it elsewhere, Newgrounds logo would still be on it. It would also help Newgrounds branch out more and be kind of like a studio in a way. Now again, this is just an idea. It is also only for those who can make big payments, the amount being $100 per sponsorship. If you can't make this kind of payment then don't despair and don't try to make a payment that you can't commit to. There are ideas getting thrown around on this. If you still want to support Newgrounds on a smaller scale, you can become a Newgrounds Supporter. If you have any ideas to share on this, then please post them in the thread.

The Fall of Newgrounds

@TomFulp has a follow up on the NG Money Gang. Money has been raised to gain sponsorship of another entry in @Doki's Salad Fingers series. It will be debuting on Newgrounds later this month! Madness Day is September 22nd, slowly approaching. The prize pool for all of the categories is growing!

Robot Day 2023 Winners

@MindChamber has announced the winners of this year's Robot Day! 1st Place went to the team behind Waha's Robot Daze, @rickropes, @Skoops, and @MaldivirDragonwitch. 2nd Place went to @CrossCarrasco for his song Quantize My Heartbeat (NGADM 2023), which as you've seen in the title is also his piece for the Newgrounds Audio Deathmatch. The game LISA: THE PAINFUL RPG recently got a huge update. In celebration, @BooneBum and @Spinalpalm are hosting a collaboration. In the new definitive edition, campfire conversations were added. They're essentially scenes to flesh out the characters more. Here's one of the new conversations. The goal is to make more of them in akin to the collab Africa Dudes.

There are a number of rules and guidelines to follow when submitting your piece. See the full news post by clicking the pic above for more information if you're interested in being a part of this collab. The due date is November 28, 2023.

On September 1st, 2003, @TheWeebl graced Newgrounds with badger ver.1. This became widely popular on Newgrounds and took the Internet by storm, before YouTube even was a thing. TheWeebl has released a new movie to celebrate it's 20th Anniversary! Check it out below, alongside the original!

@Gman250, better known as Gary Brolsma, has updated his iconic Numa Numa Dance for 2023. If you don't know what Numa Numa is here's the details. Gary Brolsma was just fooling around with his webcam and made a lip sync video to Dragostea Din Tei by the band O-Zone. This was back in 2004, which at the time YouTube didn't exist. Flash dominated the Internet. Gary uploaded his creation to Newgrounds. Unfortunately, the Internet is no longer the wild west that it used to be, so due to entries with copyrighted music getting cracked down on, it was removed. The history page still stands in its place though.

MY GAME KICKSTARTER!

@Cubesona finished streaming for the NG Summer Fest. He's been working on the artwork for a new game entitled Hymn to the Earless God. An RPG where you explore a mysterious and hostile animal planet. He's working alongside Kasey Ozymy, creator of Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass. Check out the trailer below! If you like what you see, then you can help by backing the project on Kickstarter!

I GOT MARRIED, Recording is COMPLETE for Better Than The Book's upcoming album, more guitar videos + more!

@Jabun recently got married to his girlfriend of 10 years back in mid August. They had a wonderful wedding and reception. There was a mosh-pit, dancing, heartfelt speeches, it was an outright party. Jabun has also finished recording for Better Than The Book, his upcoming album. 10 tracks and 4 bonus tracks are in the editing phase now before mixing. He's also been releasing new guitar videos on YouTube. You can see the full playlist here! There's even more that Jabun is doing over on his Patreon if you wanna check that out. One item being a fully recorded demo of his song Rewrite which will be on his upcoming album!

Nyan Cat was a small Internet phenomenon back in 2011. The full story can be read here, the short version though is that Nyan Cat (originally Pop-Tart Cat) was based off of comic artist Chris Torres' own Russian Blue cat. It was suggested during a Red Cross Charity event that a cat be crossed with a Pop-Tart. YouTuber saraj00n created the Nyan Cat [original] video, using a GIF that Chris Torres would create, set to the song Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya by Daniwell-P and sung by Utauloid Momo Momone. Nyan Cat would eventually reach Newgrounds.

@WoodTick decided to take the artwork and music of Nyan Cat and put it through multiple genres of music. This would net him the Daily Feature, Weekly Users' Choice, and a spot on the Frontpage.

"My introduction to Nyan Cat was this amazing video I discovered on YouTube. If you didn't watch it, it's a Slipknot video with the audio removed and replaced with the Nyat Cat song, so from the beginning, I was already primed to hear the song in ways it was never intended to be heard. While I was obsessing over that Slipknot video, I did another search and found the "a cappella" version of the Nyan Cat song, in other words, just the vocals. And then I started thinking about all the cool things I could do with that, and that's when I had the idea to just cycle through as many genres as I could manage. Of course, I instantly wanted to turn it into a video as well, so I started brainstorming visual styles as I brainstormed musical genres. Pixel-art was a no-brainer, since I have some experience doing it, and the original Nyan Cat was done with pixel animation. For those of you who find this sort of thing interesting, there were a lot of genres that I wanted to do that didn't work out for one reason or another, like jazz, rap, baroque, and even a Simpsons version. The main problem was the tempo. I couldn't keep speeding up and slowing down in the middle of the song, so I had to stick with the original tempo, and a lot of those genres just don't work at that speed."

Welcome back to the Sunday Matinee. Where we highlight the movies from the Newgrounds Portal that have captivated the users of Newgrounds! This week we're taking a look at @DannyGoodShirt's yearly Halloween collab, Dr. Good's Operating Theatre. Enjoy! Watch the first collab below. Click the header above to load the rest!

This has been a huge celebration of Newgrounds past, present, and its future. It was a lot of fun putting together this week's issue, working on The Interviewer, really connecting with a lot of creative people on the site. I am really happy to be able to bring you the news of Newgrounds every Sunday. After posting my Weekly Review on my main page, I ended up calling Rex and talking. We'll be going shopping for 1920's clothing for a murder mystery party we're going to. He has been an absolute joy to talk to and be around. I think I'm starting to fall for him more and more. Who knows where the next day will take us. I'm just happy to be in his company. I'm happy to have been a part of Newgrounds for the past 17 years and everything this site has given me. I don't know where I would be or who I would be if it weren't for Newgrounds. Thank you to all of my patrons on Patreon. Thank you to all of my readers. I hope you all have a fantastic Sunday morning! To all those who say "thank you guys who run The Tank Tribune" - it warms my heart that you think there's this big team behind this paper. It is actually just one person, me. This paper is a labor of love, and a labor of fun. I hope you all have a fantastic Sunday morning and a happy Labor Day.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Good Morning Newgrounds! We are nearing the end of Summer. A lot of kids and teenagers are going back to school. Many are beginning and returning to college. The Summer heat is still here, but Fall is right around the corner. Robot Day was yesterday, which we'll be going into further detail in next week's issue. Today is the last day of the Newgrounds Summer Festival! The Newgrounds Deathmatch is still undergoing fierce competition. The Newgrounds Underdogs’ Audio Contest Knock-out Round has officially closed and the judging process has officially started.

July 12, 1995. That is the day that Newgrounds was founded. It is actually older than Pokemon! Newgrounds has celebrated 20 years with a collab in the past. It is crazy to see that another ten years are almost here. In just two years, Newgrounds will be 30 years old. @Undertalekid12 is looking to host this year's collaboration. Check out the thread by clicking the picture above to go to the collab thread. Help Newgrounds celebrate 30 Years!

He's looking to make a game using HaxeFlixel. He wants an art gallery, maybe an audio gallery, and a long cutscene, like something out of FRIDAY NIGHT FUNKIN'.

The Eventual Decay of DeviantArt

@Over2000Blizzards has noted the changes to DeviantArt is causing users to leave to sites like Twitter, Instagram, Furaffinity, and of course Newgrounds. Although, with the changes to Twitter as we noted in last week's issue, people are leaving there too. Newgrounds has always been gaining users from DeviantArt due to changes to the site, from the sound of things, we'll be getting more. @rtil has talked about changes and moderation on SheezyArt which caused users to leave in an interview back in 2020. rtil has also spoken out on DeviantArt permabanning him and his thoughts on AI art as well. The conversation on the NSFW art and AI art scene is divisive lately. Both also tend to overlap in terms of conversation. Over2000Blizzards and rtil have offered different perspectives on these discussions in the links provided in this news bulletin. Thankfully Newgrounds won't decay due to the policies and how it features art on the site. SFW art is still prominent, NSFW is not featured on the Frontpage, AI art is completely forbidden, and we have top notch Art Moderators who have a keen eye to spot what goes against the site's guidelines. By that measure, Newgrounds will be the better place to build an art portfolio due to its standards, where DeviantArt will end up tainting its image.

@Krinkels has announced that the 17th Annual Madness Day is next month! At the time of posting this paper, it is less than a month away. There are prizes for Best Animation, Best Game, and Best Music! 1st Place will involve a cash prize plus a Makeship Plushy of a Madness character, either Hank or Tricky. Below are the rules!

Rules/Guidelines/Expectations;

  • In the event of a collab placing, all winnings will be sent to the collab organizer for them to distribute as they see fit
  • Music submissions can only be judged as individual songs. Soundscapes or Albums should be parsed/broken down into their individual tracks so that judging can be done on a individual basis.
  • All winnings will be distributed via Paypal.
  • In order for us to find you, please tag your submission with #MadnessDay2023, this is very important!
  • We can only consider submissions which debuted on Sept 22nd, or 23rd, any later or earlier and it's out of our range.
  • It should go without saying, but just in case; post it here on Newgrounds!

August Status Update

Tom has given us some updates to close off the Summer with. The Art Portal will be featuring an update to the multi-image support, making all of you aspiring comic creators able to share your comics and webtoons into one submission rather than split them up. The Art Portal will also be migrated to the Project System going forward, so multiple authors who have contributed to a piece can be credited properly.

The second update is going towards the Playlists. This feature is heavily used by The Tank Tribune, with some aspects already in place. When the changes go into effect, the Series and Collections pages will be put into the Playlist feature. When that happens, hopefully a thread to suggest items to be put into certain Collections will return or The Genre Mod Crew could have its duties expanded.

The end of this week is where a lot of deadline are. The Cog Collab, Hatsune Miku Birthday Collab and Bar Hopping Art Collab are all on August 31st. The first Writer's Jam on Newgrounds will be on September 1st. The Live Action Jam deadline is September 3rd. As we enter into September, Madness Day will be on September 22nd.

5th Dr. Good Animation Collab!

@DannyGoodShirt and @Rannitx are hosting the Fifth Annual Dr. Good's Operating Theatre is coming up. To be a part of this historic collab series, you can join by following the link above. Below are the rules and guidelines.

Requirements

  • Newgrounds Users Only
  • Horror/Horror-Comedy/Halloween related shorts only. (Weird, creepy, and gross animations are encouraged!)
  • Length: 10-90 seconds long. If you want to make something longer please let me know.
  • NO LOW-EFFORT MEMES
  • DEADLINE: OCT 1st

Send you entry to DannyGoodShirt's E-Mail at DANNYGOODSHIRT@GMAIL.COM. You can also PM DannyGoodShirt for the Discord Information. Below are the past Dr. Good's Operating Theatre Collabs.

This week's featured artist is criminally underrated. @AmericanMuscleHead has not only a unique style that kind of reminds me of Gorillaz artwork. One thing that he does incredibly that I love, is the stars he puts into his drawings. He has been on the site since 2020 and even has an art thread, yet he only has 42 fans. That needs to change! Check out his works below! Follow him on Newgrounds! Donate to his Ko-fi! Do all of the things!

New Singles, New Album, & Zero Hour

@ThatJohnnyGuy has been hard at work. He has released a new song from Piercing Lazer entitled The Midas Touch. He made a soundtrack for an RPG that was cancelled. He has been given permission to release the soundtrack, which you can listen to here on Bandcamp. He has also released a song from his vault entitled A Silent Voice - Void, which he wrote while in a dark place, which you can read about in the link above. Things have been improving for him though. A new album entitled Post-Nostalgia, Vol. 1: Inner Static will be released on September 30th. It is one of three albums that will be releasing. It follows the darkness that ThatJohnnyGuy was going through during a rough time in his life.

The game Newgrounds: Zero Hour has been progressing splendidly. If you haven't played the demo yet, you can here on Newgrounds! You can also learn more about the game through the NG: Zero Hour Fan Server!

The last thing to note is ThatJohnnyGuy is looking to start a Newgrounds Ballads Collab. The purpose to make a tribute song for some of your favorite Newgrounds Users and Content Creators. With some aspects of parody, but keeping it classy. You can join the Newgrounds Audio Portal Collab Center Server and become a part of the collab! Rules and information are in the link!

The story of Raptor Jesus itself is a part of Internet history. @Sexual-Lobster decided to feature this character in the Australian talk show, Q+A. It was a short movie, with quick jokes. Raptor Jesus' one line, that ending, the Captain Planet knife fight, it's all amazing how much he fit into one movie.

"All of the random stuff has a deeper meaning, but I doubt most people here would care about Australian politics so I won't go into it, plus it would take a lot of exposition. To answer your question, basically I really liked and wanted to animate Raptor Jesus. Your question implies that you're not familiar with him; in a nutshell he's a meme from 4chan. You probably noticed I like drawing lizards, and I love the irreverent attitude towards Christianity. The point of this film was to highlight the fact that no one was talking about climate change anymore (and also that both the prime minister and the alternative prime minister at the time were church loonies), at least in the media spotlight in Australia. Since then our prime minister, the silver haired guy wearing the dress and the moustache in the audience was overthrown, partly (or mostly, depending on who you talk to) over this issue."

Hello and I sorry

@ForNoReason was off the site for a while, but he's back! His account was hacked and someone was abusing his moderator powers. Thankfully Tom was able to help him retrieve his account and clean up the mess. Welcome Back ForNoReason!

What's THAT song that turns on your Berserker Mode?

@Grillyf wants to know that song that when you hear it you just want to beat the hell out of anyone that gets in your way! The song that just pumps your adrenaline up to where you have the power to run through walls! For Grillyf it's King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man. For The Tank Tribune, that would be Master of Puppets by Metallica.

The week can get people down sometimes. With all of the hustle and bustle and action packed drama that entails our lives, sometimes it's nice to just kickback and relax. This week we're featuring the Trapped series by @stonefruitstudios. A collection of mazes to escape out of!

If a game is not loading properly for you, then install the Newgrounds Flash Player. There are instructions on how to do so. If it is still not working or you don't understand, create a thread in the Where is / How to / Help! Forum for assistance.

I don't have much to talk to all of you about down here. Except work has been killer lately. If you knew my day-to-day schedule, your head would spin. I have been working on The Interviewer more, in which I am awaiting a response from one game developer. I am in the process of writing questions for an animator with multiple series on here, and I just got the confirmation PM for a guest I've interviewed over ten years ago who has done a lot since then. If you want to know more about that, I post behind-the-scenes stuff on my Patreon. Shameless plug I know. I will always tell you to donate to Newgrounds first and foremost, because without Newgrounds, my Patreon is useless. The Tank Tribune I still put a lot of work into. It's nice to be back on a consistent work schedule. Although my day job is a hindrance, it doesn't take a lot out of me. Thank you all for reading and I hope you have a fantastic Sunday morning!

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Good Morning Newgrounds! Welcome to The Tank Tribune! The Official Newspaper of Newgrounds! My name is The-Great-One. I've been the writer and editor of this newspaper for three years now. There have been a lot of ups and downs in my life, redesigns to the paper, new additions, cut sections, the closing of the General Forum, with new updates that have made this paper look neater and better! I just wanted to spend the opening of this paper discussing a small sample of history that this paper has gone through. Now, life is going amazingly well, and Newgrounds is going through another boon period that has been growing more and more due to the other platforms not understanding what made their sites great. While Newgrounds continues to evolve with feedback from its fans and contributors to the site. The month of August alone has a lot of events and contests going on. With the annual Clock Day, the Newgrounds Summer Fest, the Summer Animation Jam, this year being the Live Action Jam, and Robot Day. Even then, that's just a small amount of things going on in August on Newgrounds. We haven't even gotten to September with Madness Day and what events that may come then. The Newgrounds Audio Death Match started at the end of Spring and battle happens throughout the seasons. This and more you can only experience here! Here are the hip happenings of Newgrounds!

It would give us one of the first factions here on Newgrounds, The Clock Crew. For a longer in-depth history of The Clock Crew and B, check out the video below by @Graeme!

Live Action Jam

@BrandyBuizel is hosting this year's Summer Animation Jam, with the theme being Live Action. If you haven't finished your submission yet or haven't started, you have until September 3rd! That's just around the corner! It still needs to be an animation, but with some live action elements in it. Here are some examples below!

The annual Robot Day here on Newgrounds is coming up! Hosted by @MindChamber the festivities to celebrate robots, including our own @P-Bot, is this Saturday! Check out some of the past Robot Day submissions here on Newgrounds!

Twitter Exodus

With Elon Musk acquiring Twitter, he has been making a lot of changes to the platform that has upset creators and community members here on Newgrounds. Elon recently changed the name of the site to X. Elon is also looking to remove the block feature from the site.

@WhiteKitsu is leaving the site due to it not being a good platform for artists. @TheAerolithe is leaving due to the changes. @Lemon-Andy has shown his disdain. @wpzkx was suspended on Twitter for trying to talk someone out of killing themselves. @FunnelCakeClown recently left Twitter and is looking to make some friends here. This is just a handful of those who have recently left.

I imagine much like the Tumblr Exodus, this one will grow in size as Elon continues to make changes to the platform overall. We should be ready to embrace the influx of users that will soon come to Newgrounds!

@Kirbopher would be browsing the Audio Portal and come across two different songs. One being the Geno's Forest || ROBOVoice. Which is such an iconic song that it has been heard in the Nico Nico Douga Final Mix Version. It would be remixed into SMRPG - Rawest Forest, which Kirbopher would animate.

"I had heard the original many times and thought it was cool, but then I had found the remix version from the site and got inspired to make a music video out of it. The original isn't very "musicy" in the sense that it's more of just a loop as opposed to the Rawest Forest remix is much more like a full-fledged piece of polished music."

The week can get people down sometimes. With all of the hustle and bustle and action packed drama that entails our lives, sometimes it's nice to just kickback and relax. Hello all who make it to the bottom of the paper. I usually talk to you on a personal level here and I want to continue that. I am most interested in how people read The Tank Tribune. Do you read it on your computer? Your tablet? Your phone? Do you enjoy it on a Sunday morning with a cup of coffee? Perhaps on a Sunday night with a nice latte? Do you read it at work later on in the week? I know the paper is part of many's bowel movement routine, I just want to know how and when you read it. As for my personal life. I believe I have spoken about the guy I'm talking to named Rex. He says hi by the way. We went to a 90's Themed Party recently. My little brother is coming home from being enlisted in the army. Which, with the way things have been going in the world, is a heavy weight of worry off of my shoulders. I am glad I can find a way to involve community posts here with the closing of General. I have added and removed sections throughout the years, so getting back to the basics from Issue NO. 1 seems to have been the step in the right direction. Thank you to everyone who have been reading The Tank Tribune for these past three years, and I hope you have a fantastic Sunday morning!

The week can get people down sometimes. With all of the hustle and bustle and action packed drama that entails our lives, sometimes it's nice to just kickback and relax. This week we just have a selection of some fun games on the site!

If a game is not loading properly for you, then install the Newgrounds Flash Player. There are instructions on how to do so. If it is still not working or you don't understand, create a thread in the Where is / How to / Help! Forum for assistance.

It has been a while since I put something down here. I sadly didn't have enough time to work on the paper due to my workload. I've also a lot going on in September and October that I've been gearing up for. I've also been dedicating part of my time to The Interviewer. Thankfully I also have vacation time coming up at the end of September, so that'll be nice. Thank you all for reading and I hope you have a wonderful rest of the week!

RIP Instagram (and what's next)

@wavetro has left his Instagram account behind. He gave a review of Instagram, describing its flaws, and its stranglehold on its users that it tries to achieve. The part of this post, which is the bulk of it, is the explanation of the other social media sites that creators use to get their names out there. YouTube, Twitter, Odysee, and Newgrounds. If you're an online creator, you should definitely read it.

We are currently in Round 1 of Newgrounds Audio Deathmatch 2023. The Tank Tribune sat down with former combatant, judge, co-host, and current host of this year's Deathmatch @TaintedLogic, to talk about this and the Newgrounds Underdogs' Audio Contest.

Interviewer: @The-Great-One

Interviewee: @TaintedLogic

The-Great-One: You are hosting two contests this year. One being the (NGUAC). How has this contest evolved over the years? What makes you passionate about it after so long?

TaintedLogic: When I first joined Newgrounds about 11 years ago, I was most excited about using it as a platform to share my own music. I still enjoy making music, but over the years I’ve cultivated a passion for giving others feedback on theirs. I think I’m actually pretty good at giving constructive feedback, something I’m not sure I can say of making music myself, especially on the production/mixing side. I review every piece that I score as a judge for these contests. I don’t think of the goal of these contests as just to determine a winner. I see people coming back to these contests year after year, improving greatly in between. It’s really fulfilling for me to see that improvement and think that I’ve helped motivate that improvement, even in a small way.

The main way the NGUAC has evolved over time is that it’s gotten bigger. The first year, we had 63 participants. Since Covid, it’s been about 400-450. The format is pretty much the same, although the rules have gotten longer and more specific as I’ve learned to anticipate certain problems. I’m also much more proactive about sending reminders for people to participate, boosting our “retention rate” in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Also, in the early days of the NGUAC, shortly before the results were posted, I would build anticipation for the results by concocting an elaborate fictional narrative in a series of posts explaining why the results and/or judges were “in danger.” Like many aspects of the NGUAC, these “stall stories” were inspired by some (tamer) jokes made by @Step and @Echo in the early days of the NGADM. Eventually, I discontinued the stall stories, in part because some contestants got very confused and even angry with me. Also, a lot of the forum discussion about the NGUAC now takes place off of Newgrounds itself, especially on Discord.

Most importantly, in 2017 I changed the name of the NGUAC. It used to be the NGAUC, but some folks on the Chips Compo site run by @Johnfn convinced me to switch the U and the A so that we had a standing contest named “chips” and another one named “guac.” XD

The-Great-One: The other contest (is the NGADM). How did you come from auditioning back in Deathmatch 2013 to hosting ten years later?

TaintedLogic: I think it was @Step and @Echo, actually. Darklight17 wasn’t even a member of the site in 2009. But anyway, before I hosted or even participated in the NGADM, I was just a passionate spectator. As a @Waterflame fan, I followed the contest closely in 2012, when he finished 2nd overall. I made a Newgrounds account shortly thereafter, and decided to audition the following year. But I actually have both judged and hosted the NGADM before. Step asked me to be a fill-in judge one time while he was still hosting, maybe in 2015. Then, when he and Echo stepped away from hosting a year later, I helped find new hosts and judges to re-organize the contest, a process led by @ThatJohnnyGuy (then known as RealFaction). @ChronoNomad and I ended up co-hosting the contest in 2017, and I also came back on board as a judge for 2019. So I have a long history of stepping in to help with the NGADM as needed, although the NGUAC usually keeps me plenty busy by itself. :)

iu_1043797_8044563.webp

The-Great-One: The NGUAC and the NGADM seem to be similar in nature. What are the differences between the two?

TaintedLogic: It's true that the NGUAC format is heavily inspired by the NGADM. I think the main differences are as follows:

1) For the first couple of rounds, the NGUAC subdivides the contestants into groups based on fan total, a proxy for experience level (both with music and with Newgrounds). This helps give less-experienced users a better chance of advancing to future rounds and gaining exposure from the competition, since they're not directly competing with some of the heavy-hitting NG veterans. Then, in the final round, musicians of all skill levels face each other, sometimes with surprising results!

2) The NGUAC is way shorter - 3 rounds and 2 months vs. 6 rounds and 5 months for the NGADM. I try to make sure that the NGUAC is wrapping up before most high school and college kids are back in school. The NGADM usually wraps up in November.

3) A lot of the later rounds in the NGADM are 1-v-1 match-ups, which makes the contest really intense and personal later on. The NGADM also has a series of “fill-ins” lined up ready to rejoin the competition in case someone drops out. That’s not as necessary in the NGUAC because the groups you’re competing against are so large - usually 30+ people in every round.

4) There are also a couple of small administrative differences. The NGADM has usually been stricter with "forum thread management" - creating threads for both discussion and submission, as opposed to one for both in the NGUAC. Various other NGADM hosts have also implemented age restrictions, banned submissions from unscouted users, and had much harder deadlines, whereas the NGUAC has always accepted and even encouraged young and inexperienced musicians to join, and in recent years has had a 24-hour leeway period with submission deadlines. Overall, the NGADM has more of a reputation for exclusivity. Most people join the NGADM because they already know it exists. Meanwhile, I send hundreds of personal invites for the NGUAC to Audio Portal users every year, simply because they’ve posted a song in the few weeks before the contest starts.

It used to be that people regarded the NGUAC as kind of like a stepping stone to being able to compete effectively in the NGADM - users like @Bassfiddlejones and @FinnMK won the NGUAC one year and the NGADM the next. But I think the “stepping stone” model is less relevant now that the NGUAC typically has more participants than the NGADM. In recent years, we’ve had really talented NGUAC winners like @VociferousMusic and @Anthonyragus who have never auditioned for the NGADM.

The-Great-One: How do you like the prospects in both contests this year compared to last year?

TaintedLogic: Oh my goodness, I don’t even have the space here to list all of the musicians I’m excited about. Suffice it to say that I added more than 10% of the NGADM auditions this year to my favorites list, most of which I will likely end up downloading into my personal song library, and that I will certainly pad my favorites list again after the NGUAC tryouts are complete.

The-Great-One: Anything you want to add about the Deathmatch and the Underdogs?

TaintedLogic: Huge thank you to my fellow judges in both contests! These contests are not just something that I can manage alone. I have a lot of help sending PM invites (@ADR3-N), identifying potential rules violations (@Everratic), and managing the Discord servers (@LD-W). Plenty of contestants also make constructive suggestions for how to improve the competitions every year, which I appreciate. These contests ultimately serve as a way of enhancing the sense of community we have on Newgrounds, forming lasting connections between talented aspiring creators, and so they would mean nothing without the contestants themselves. People might think of the NGUAC in particular as “TaintedLogic’s baby,” but it takes a village to raise a child. :)

Welcome to something a little different. To celebrate the Newgrounds Underdogs' Audio Contest and the Newgrounds Audio Deathmatch, I thought a change to the history portion of the paper was in order. This is the Audio Portal History. A lot of movies and games on Newgrounds wouldn't be what they are without music. This site has a ton of it. Not just that, it is one of the best places for musicians to put their works up for feedback and use. The best place to start would be the winner of the first Newgrounds Audio Deathmatch on the site. @ErikMcClure, who went by Blackhole12, was one of the combatants in the first Deathmatch. The first Deathmatch was a new idea and was still being worked on. ErikMcClure would snag his victory on May 24, 2010 with his song Soar [Original Mix]. If you're not following him on Newgrounds, you should, he's still on the site making music to this day, with his latest song entitled Eternal Sky.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Good Afternoon Newgrounds! Sorry this wasn't out this morning. I wasn't sure when the first round of the NGADM was going to begin and I had to be in bed for work Sunday morning. Turns out it was up a couple hours early. I thought it wouldn't be up until Sunday. Go figure. Anyways. I'm still working on getting the format to where I truly want it going forward. Hoping to expand this little paper into more than just news. Was thinking some exclusive articles and interviews, running some contests, etc. Things that I have been tinkering with lately. With that out of the way, here are the hip happenings of Newgrounds!

When the pandemic was in full effect, we were all stuck at home. With nothing to do. Can't go anywhere. Can't spend time with friends. TV was lackluster, and watching a movie at home just made you want to go to the movies. One Newgrounds member would bring us a series that would last us throughout the pandemic and give many Newgrounders here laughs. @wavetro brought us The Stickmen 2020 Series. It would begin with food cart.

Here's the thing- I really try to keep my character designs as neutral as possible. Not just because of my love of iconography/symbols/minimalism that probably developed from my years of vector PowerPoint comics, but because I want people to approach my videos with no expectations. If I use specific kinds of characters (like certain animals,) it will attract specific fanbases that will associate me with them, which takes away the control I have that allows people to discover my work without any preconceived notions. Of course, I can't entirely avoid using animal-based characters since I made some that were fish or birds, but I try to keep all of their appearances simple. It allows people to not get distracted by the character designs and just focus on the story. (This is in direct contrast to art communities like Twitter that value character designs themselves and the simple joy of bringing them to life, rather than what those characters actually do. This opposite thinking I had made creation exponentially harder for me of course, and I'd say it's even borderline disrespectful that I treated the actual art/animation step as "an obstacle" to what was actually the completion and sharing of my story ideas via video.) The stickman design I tried out in food cart was the perfect abstraction of literal humans. It let people watch my videos with visual interest but without feeling alienated by the character designs. I finally recognized what I had on my hands with this video and RAN with it that year, which was the start of Stickmen 2020...

Flash Preservation with Ruffle

For those out of the loop. Ruffle is what Newgrounds uses to help run Flash movies and games here on Newgrounds. One of the developers of this tool is Newgrounds own @mike. You can help out and be a part of the Ruffle Testing / Flash Preservation Crew by trying out entries and posting them in the Ruffle Testing thread. If you want to help out here's how.

If you’re ever checking out classic Flash on NG and it isn’t loading in the browser, add this to the URL to test it with Ruffle:

/format/flash?emulate=flash

For example:

https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/59593/format/flash?emulate=flash

If it works then post your results in the Ruffle Testing thread. Preserving aspects of the Internet is a daunting task. One that Newgrounds has admirably taken on. You can also help by becoming a Newgrounds Supporter as well!

Live Action Jam

@BrandyBuizel is hosting possibly his last Summer Animation Jam this year. The theme being a Live Action Jam. Now live action isn't typically allowed on Newgrounds, with the purpose of Newgrounds being animation driven. There have been entries on Newgrounds that consist of live action, but have animated qualities to them. This is probably one of the most ambitious animation jams on the site. Go to the thread to learn more about it. Some examples of live action blending with animation are below.

Back in 2008, @jmtb02 would present us with a game about a little blue elephant and the mundane nature of unlocking achievements. Sometimes in clever ways and sometimes in the simplest ways. This would be Achievement Unlocked. A game with surprisingly enough no medals. This would be the start of a new meta game idea that he would expand on.

iu_1024446_8044563.png

The week can get people down sometimes. With all of the hustle and bustle and action packed drama that entails our lives, sometimes it's nice to just kickback and relax. Today we're taking a look at a few more titles from @jmtb02. We already featured him in the Flash Portal History section. To select just this game would be a disservice to what he has brought to the site.
