The Liar was in three parts and was an old tale told by Sykohyko. Many of you probably know him more for Neenja as well as Abo & Karo.

"The Liar is based on an old Armenian story. I've always loved epics, fables and fantasy worlds and Armenia is full of them. I know I mostly do comedy, but I'm more into that stuff. It's just harder to achieve the kind of quality those stories deserve. Even the Liar is disappointing to me as far as quality goes. Again something I plan to attempt in the future."

RECIPES FROM THE NEWGROUNDS COMMUNITY

Welcome back to the Newgrounds Kitchen! Today we have an exclusive recipe from the Supporter Party Forum. It comes from @GriffinLancer and it's recipe for beef stew! Perfect for a dinner with friends and family! To see the original recipe then you need to Become a Supporter.

Beef Stew

So, I've been working on this recipe for awhile. Just taking bits and pieces of other recipes of Beef Stew, and heavily inspired by Chef Jean-Pierre's take on stew, I figured I'd give up the goods and show off what it looks like, after I post the recipe.

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 lbs (1.36kg) of chuck roast, cut into 2-3 inch (5-7cm) pieces.
  • a dozen pearl onions, or 1 cup (226g) of yellow onion, diced.
  • a bottle of port wine.
  • 12 baby brussels sprouts
  • 12 carrots, cut into lengths similar to the beef.
  • 29 oz (822g) Tomato puree.
  • 14.5 oz (411g) diced tomatoes.
  • 2 Yukon gold potatoes (300g), diced.
  • 1lb (453g) Button mushrooms, cut into 4ths or 6ths.
  • 1-and-half quart Beef broth (1L give or take)
  • 4oz (113g) flour
  • Kosher Salt (Or regular, peasant salt if you have that)
  • Coarse ground pepper (Or just the canned stuff.)
  • A branch of rosemary and thyme (destemmed and roughly chopped)

STEP 1: Start with opening the bottle of Port and taking a big whiff. You smell that booze? Take a sip, loser. You're gonna need some lubrication because you totally forgot to Mise en place. You don't even remember French class, but you know that this thing is important, and forgetting now fills you with anxiety.

STEP 2: Take another drink. Realize you need this for cooking, despite how good it tastes, and now you close the bottle.

STEP 3: Okay, in a large pan, lubricate with olive oil and bring up to temp. Take your pieces of beef and caramelize them, strain the excess fat, put it aside. That brown stuff in the pan? Save it. Deglaze with the port. (Just pour some wine into the pan. Trust me.)

STEP 4: Now, pour that reduction into a bowl to hold for a minute. Now put a pot down, lubricate, and toss in those peeled pearl onions and caramelize them; shouldn't take long- pearl onions cook quick...a little too quick.

STEP 5: With haste, throw in the Mushrooms and add some Kosher Salt so the fungus sweats out all its water. Now let it cook so all the moisture evaporates. You'll know you're doing it right when you the mushrooms start to brown a bit. Now toss in more wine to get that sweet, sweet fond off the pot. That broth's ready to go in, along with that beef reduction we made earlier. Now toss in the puree and the diced tomatoes, the potatoes, and the rosemary and thyme. Stir it a bit. You'll notice you may not have enough liquid. You're wrong. Pour a little more wine.

STEP 6: So, a little thing about thickening your stew. People tend to overlook the importance of when to incorporate flour to your stew to allow it to thicken. I'm telling you, now is the time to do it. Otherwise, you're going to be walking around with a quarter pound of glue in your gut, and that's no bueno.

STEP 7: Have you ever made paper mache? Water and flour. Remember your 6th grade Halloween mask you made with that glue? You probably have it somewhere laying around in storage, or you destroyed it, like the non-conformist you are. Point is, flour makes good glue. You need to get that gluten nice and loose so it mixes properly through the stew.

STEP 8: Get a double-mesh strainer and a wire whip or a rubber spatula and sink it into the pot so half the container is submerged. Now add that flour and strain it through, stirring as you do this. This is how you incorporate flour to thicken sauces and stews. Once that's done, stir your pot, and cover it. Now simmer it for 2 hours.

STEP 9: Contemplate drinking the rest of the wine because you're a 20-something with nothing going on in your life right now, and it seems like a good idea. You're in your PJs and slippers. Who's gonna see you? The dinner party's in 3 hours.

STEP 10: 2 hours later, check the stew. You should have a beautiful thick sauce and tender pieces of beef and veg. I'm not kidding, you're going to love it.

STEP 11: Oh shit, that's right. You forgot the sprouts and carrots, idiot.

STEP 12: Start a quick pot of water, blanch the sprouts for 2-3 minutes. You'll know its done when things seem 'brighter' than usual.

STEP 13: Quickly wash off your pan and re-lubricate with some butter and salt/pepper. Chop your carrots into lengths, toss it into the pan along with those blanched baby brussels sprouts. Toss vigorously. Turn off the heat. Plate up the stew, add the carrots and sprouts. Voila. It's probably the most effort you've put into a stew, but you've convinced yourself it's worth it.

STEP 14: Your friends cancelled. You now have stew for a week, and a bottle of port for yourself. Imbibe carelessly.

The week can get people down sometimes. With all of the hustle and bustle and action packed drama that entails our lives, sometimes it's nice to just kickback and relax. Here are a few games to play to unwind on this Monday Morning.

Things have been going better for me recently. I have now switched over from being a night owl to an early bird, so I'm awake at 7AM and asleep around 10PM-11PM. The shift has been beneficial and I've been able to get more work done than I normally would. The Tank Tribune will always be here to keep you updated on Newgrounds. Hopefully if we get a Literature Portal putting this paper together will become easier. One can hope though. Enjoy your morning Newgrounds!
